Barbados is the leading island destination in the Southern Caribbean for British, North American and European tourists. There are a wide range of nature attractions including caves and marine parks, historic sites, festivals, golf courses and a range of other activities. By the end of 2003, the island had hosted over 1 million tourists, of whom 531,211 were stay-over visitors and 559,000 were cruise ship visitors. Accommodation for tourists is targeted to increase from approximately 7,250 rooms in 2003 to approximately 9,500 rooms by 2010. Over 70% of the country's foreign exchange is earned by the tourism sector. The business community is sophisticated, and the government is stable, so life here continues after the tourists pack up their sun oils and return home.

The effect of Barbados ' history has created a blend of African and European Culture which is uniquely Barbadian. The island has a rich culture and heritage which can be seen in the island's cuisine, architecture, in the indigenous musical art forms such as the Tuk Band and above all the festivals.

The shopping in Barbados lives up to its reputation as a duty-free haven. The island has many great deals on offer. Luxury goods are in abundance; china, leather, jewellery, perfume, and crystal - all available for up to 40% less than would be found in the UK . Bridgetown offers the most choice and is the best area for duty-free shopping. Broad Street is the place savvy shoppers usually hits first - with several malls and endless boutiques it is difficult to imagine not finding something of interest for every shopping taste. Also Look for the West Coast Mall for duty-free buys in the Holetown area. However, Barbados shopping is not uniquely dedicated to duty-free. Exclusive local handicrafts can also be purchased in shops all over the island, especially in Bridgetown and Christchurch .

St Philip is the largest parish on the island but with less than half the population of busy Christchurch . The parish has a different feel from its more touristy neighbour with no crowds, far less development and a general sense of isolation. The coastline here is rugged with only a handful of white-sand beaches divided from each other by long cliffs and rocky outcrops. The South Coast is a curious mixture of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean . This coast is more lively than the West Coast but calmer than the East or North, so you have a happy medium.
